High Fiber Diet

This diet furnishes adequate amounts of all the essential nutrients needed by the body and a very liberal fiber (roughage) content. Roughage is indigestible fiber found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grain cereals. It provides bulk to the large intestine and, accompanied by an adequate fluid intake, is a stimulant to elimination. Regular eating and elimination habits are vital to good health.

General Instructions

Drink at least 8-10 glasses of liquids perday, preferrably water. If you must drink soft drinks, make them diet drinks.
Eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly.
Take some exercise daily, if permitted by your physician. Walking is particularly good.

Diet Instructions

Fruits - Use all fruits and juices liberally (fresh, cooked, dried or canned). Eat raw fruit with skins when possible. Have at least four servings of fruit daily including a citrus fruit and a stewed or dried fruit. Avoid seeds of fruits (berries, figs, grapes, mangoes, tomatoes).

Vegetables - Use all vegetables liberally. Green leafy vegetables, such as cabbage, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, and other greens are particularly good.

Potato - As desired. Served baked frequently and eat the skin. Other starchy foods such as rice, macaroni, etc., may be occasionally substituted.

Meat, Fish & Poultry - One or two servings daily.

Egg - One daily if desired.

Milk - Include at least one-half (1/2) pint daily. Whole milk, skimmed, or buttermilk may be used.

Cereals - Use whole grain breads and cereals such as bran, bran flakes, Grapenut Flakes ®, puffed wheat and rice, oatmeal, Wheaties ® etc., as much as possible. Refined breads and cereals are not restricted. However, they do not contain the bulk necessary for this diet.

Sugars, Sweets - Use very moderately. Depend upon fruit as dessert.

Fats - Use butter or margarine as desired. Oil or dressing on salads as desired. Fried foods may be used in moderation.

Snacks - Keep to a minimum. Avoid popcorn and nuts.
