DaVinci surgery is a highly effective, minimally invasive surgical option for conditions such as colon cancer, rectal cancer, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Surgery is performed through a few tiny incisions. Surgeons utilize a magnified 3D vision system and special wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist.
Advantages of robotic surgery over traditional laparoscopic surgery are:
- Improved view of the operative field due to 3-D visualization in the operating console
- More precise movements with wristed instruments that articulate mimicking our hands and fingers (traditional laparoscopic surgery involves using non-articulated instruments or “straight sticks”)
- Potentially shorter lengths of stay in the hospital, earlier return to work and daily activities, and less blood loss.
Five surgeons with Colon and Rectal Specialists are now performing DaVinci surgery in Richmond.
